Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she entered Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs as she was learning about secondary education. She hoped to be a English teacher at the high school level. She had a dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, was cut short after she dropped out of school. She began her career by performing live poems and writing her own material. In the end, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. The two ended up writing You Got Me together. The singer was at the Roots performance. Later, she secured collaborations artists such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was able to perform during the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
